In the Spirit of Spring Cleaning, De-clutter Your Marketing Plan!
Many of the clients with whom I consult express similar pain points when discussing their marketing efforts, especially:
“There are so many options from which to choose; how do you decide on what to keep and what gets kicked to the curb?”
There is certainly a lot of what I like to call “pretty garbage” out there. Doesn’t it seem like everyone has some type of “digital marketing” product or service they are offering?
Doesn’t it all sound so appealing: the social media, the websites, the apps, the mobile-friendly everything’s, the search engine marketing, all of the technological gimmicks?
And then, on top of all that, you have the traditional ways that are hanging on to relevancy by a thread: the print advertising, FM radio, TV, billboards.
I’m just going stop there because I think everyone gets what I am laying down here. It is absolutely chaotic! It’s like that one drawer in your house that has everything to offer but few items that you will probably ever use, “The JUNK Drawer”.
Holding on to Marketing Solutions that Should Already Be Curbside…
Someone should make a TV show called “Marketing Hoarders” and stage interventions! (Anyone who still advertises in yellow pages or spends any of their marketing dollars with yellow page companies at all, would be strongly considered for the first episode). It would no doubt be pretty painful to watch!
All of those wasted dollars trying to reach top of funnel, i.e. non-qualified buyers. If you see yourself in this description, there is good news for you! Your intervention can start now, and it won’t be televised. The solution to de-cluttering your marketing plan is actually quite simple. All you have to do is have an efficient way to track results. Sounds pretty straight forward, right? Let me explain this process!
Sorting Through the Marketing Clutter…
So, what exactly do I mean by “track everything” (and No, the person answering the phone for your business is not the type of tracking I am referring to).
I remember back in 2001, when the most common methods of tracking your marketing and advertising, were phone call and coupon tracking. These proved to not be the most efficient or precise methods.
Tracking marketing and advertising in 2016 is mind boggling. From a consumer’s standpoint, you basically cannot do anything nowadays without some sort of tracking going on behind the scenes. It is beautiful, frightening, and necessary, all in one. The data that can be collected is highly valuable on so many levels though. It is intelligence that every business owner and marketer desires. Every tool imaginable is available when it comes to determining your marketing effectiveness.
